Maybe I should add this to my question: Is there a test that I can run that check that all the hardware is fully functional?
I find it hard to believe that the unit has faulty hardware when the mobile LTE provider allocates a public IP address to the connection, but the unit then cannot route an traffic via that address. That smells like a software routing issue to me, correct?
