General • WINBOX: connection 1 hop away goes instead to closest router

Running winbox (in Wine on openSuse 15.5) on notebook connected to enet bridge of MikroTik router #1 (gateway) with subnet ..11.0/24 and trying to reach router #2 (lab) which is connected to router #1 via wired enet (interface 3 on gateway and interface 1 on lab). Connecting to #1 from notebook on subnet ..11.0/24 , winbox shows the correct IP (..11.1) and ID (gateway). All is good.
When winbox supposedly connects from a notebook on subnet ..11.0/24 to router #2 the banner of winbox shows the desired IP (..22.1) but the ID is "gateway" and all interactions are with router #1, gateway.
From a second notebook on subnet ..22.0/24 winbox connects properly to router #2 and shows it's ID: lab.
Both router #1, gateway, and the notebook on its subnet ..11.0 can ping router #2 at its IP, ..22.1 Oddly, neither router shows the other in the "Neighbors" window.
Winbox from subnet ..11.0/24 interacts only with router #1. Doesn't seem right to me--should be able to address a router one hop away with winbox, shouldn't we?
