It depends on the structure of your network. When you have just a home network, it usually is best to turn off STP completely (protocol-mode=none).
In certain situations you cannot do that, e.g. when having a bonding interface with hardware acceleration.

When you want to keep STP, indeed you must manually configure each port to be the proper type. When you do not do that, and keep everything at the old defaults, STP will negotiate on each newly added port or wifi client, making things slow and causing problems.
e.g. when a wireless device connects the WiFi it will get connected at 5 GHz, STP on the bridge tries to find if this is a loop, the DHCP takes several second, the device becomes impatient and disconnects, then connects on 2 GHz instead.
To solve that these changes were made.
