I manage my own resolver with Unbound/DNSSEC to root on an RPi4 which is well fast enough for my needs. Can't see me changing anytime soon. There are many good dns resolver options to choose from. That is what I mean! E.g. "unbound" provides everything the RouterOS resolver can do now, plus additional things that are still on the list of things-to-do, like DNSSEC support. I'm sure once work is done on that, all the bugs come back to haunt them.
Unbound is great and supports everything but may be overkill for a small router...
There is also knot-resolver which seems to be a bit lighter.
Dnsmasq also comes to mind that supports DNSSEC and also provides very useful DHCP and TFTP servers.
And most Linux distributions today have systemd-resolved by default.
So yes there are options but the main issue IMHO is that it has to be small enough to fit even on smallest MikroTik routers which already seems to be struggling with space...
