Yes it's an interesting topic. LLDP-MED simplify a lot telephony setups with autoprovisioning. It is specially important when there is more than a couple phones in the setup.Thank you very much for starting this thread: the topic seems very important to me.
It avoids the need of double boot for phones when a tagged voice VLAN is desired, and even more importantly, simplify a lot servicing taks, when phones need to be replaced or moved from a network to another one.
With LLDP-MED, simply connect a phone without any configuration, and it will boot on the tagged voice VLAN without manual intervention or a complex DHCP setup with double boot.
Put the phone back on an untagged network, and it will boot.
Try to do the same thing without LLDP-MED, you will see that it is a lot more hassle.
Unfortunately LLDP-MED is rarely used, at least for small and medium scale telephony installations, because the hardware does not always implement it, or because activation of LLDP-MED inside some switches is only available on the command line.
